Ser and estar in the past: era, fue, estaba, estuvo

Short answer

Ser and estar each have two past tenses, so English "was" has four Spanish translations. Era and estaba describe — background, how things were. Fue and estuvo narrate — a bounded period that started and finished. Ask whether you are describing the scene or reporting a completed stretch of time.

The problem doubles

At A2 you learned to choose between ser and estar. In the past you choose twice: first which verb, then which past tense. One English was covers all four.

estarestabaestuvo

The first column is the imperfecto — the scene, the background, what things were like. The second is the pretérito — a period with both ends marked.

usted / él / ellaerafueestabaestuvo

ustedes / elloseranfueronestabanestuvieron

Ser in the imperfecto is one of only three irregular verbs in that whole tense. Estar in the imperfecto is perfectly regular — estaba, estabas, estábamos. The two pretérito columns are the ones you have to learn.

Era describes, fue narrates

Neither is more correct. They are doing different jobs in a conversation.

Two places where the choice is fixed rather than a judgement call:

Clock time is always era / eran. Eran las once cuando llegó. Era la una. There is no version of this with fue.

An event takes ser, and a specific past event takes fue. La fiesta fue en la casa de su tía. El concierto fue el sábado. Compare la torta estaba en la mesa — a thing, so estar.

Estaba is a state, estuvo is a stretch

The clue is usually a measured quantity of time: toda la semana, tres días, dos horas, todo el día. Measured means finished means estuvo.

The two you will hear most in Lima

¿Cómo estuvo? — how was it. Said about anything that has just ended: a trip, a meal, an exam, a party. ¿Cómo estuvo el almuerzo?Estuvo rico.

Fue un gusto. — it was a pleasure. Said at the end of a first meeting, closing the encounter off.

Both are pretérito, and both are pretérito for the same reason: the thing is over, and you are reporting on it as a whole.

Fui is two verbs at once

Ser and ir share a pretérito. Fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fueron is both “I was” and “I went”.

Nothing ever goes wrong here in practice, because the rest of the sentence tells you which verb it is.

Try it

  1. Cuando salí, ___ las siete.
  2. Ella ___ mi jefa durante cinco años.
  3. La reunión ___ en el centro.
  4. ___ (nosotros) en Cusco una semana.
  5. ¿Cómo ___ tu colegio? (describe it)
  6. El niño ___ enfermo, por eso no vino.

→ 1 eran · 2 fue · 3 fue · 4 Estuvimos · 5 era · 6 estaba.

Number 6 could be estuvo if you meant “he was ill for a stretch and that is why he missed the whole thing”. Both are real sentences. That is the point of the distinction, not a flaw in it.

Era, fue, estaba or estuvo?

Eight sentences where English gives you one word, "was", and Spanish gives you four.

  1. 1Cuando llegué a la casa, ___ las once de la noche.

    Answer

eran — Clock time in the past is always imperfecto — *eran las once*, *era la una*. There is no version of this sentence with *fueron*.

  2. 2Ayer ___ un día horrible: se malogró la combi y llegué tarde a todo.

    Answer

fue — *Fue* — you are reporting one finished day as a whole. *Era un día horrible* would be setting a scene for something else that then happened.

  3. 3___ en Arequipa cinco días y después bajamos a Lima.

    Answer

Estuvimos — *Estuvimos* — five days is a measured stretch, so it is closed. *Estábamos en Arequipa* describes where we were when something else happened.

  4. 4Cuando ___ chica, vivía en Trujillo con mi abuela.

    Answer

era — *Era* — childhood is background, not an event. It is the same *era* you use for *era alta*, *era simpática*.

  5. 5La fiesta de Rosa ___ en la casa de su tía.

    Answer

fue — An event takes *ser* even when you are saying where it happened, and one specific past event takes *fue*. A thing takes *estar*: *la torta estaba en la mesa*.

  6. 6Which sentence means “yesterday I went to the market”?

    Answer

Ayer fui al mercado. — *Fui* is the pretérito of both *ser* and *ir*, and a destination with *a* can only be *ir*. *Ayer fue* would mean “yesterday he went” or “yesterday it was”.

  7. 7Tu amiga acaba de salir de un examen. ¿Cómo le preguntas qué tal le fue?

    Answer

¿Cómo estuvo el examen? — *¿Cómo estuvo?* is what Peruvians say about anything that has just finished — a meal, a trip, an exam. *¿Cómo era?* asks for a description instead.

  8. 8Yo ___ enfermo toda la semana pasada, por eso no fui a clases.

    Answer

estuve — *Estuve* — *toda la semana pasada* marks both ends of the state. *Estaba enfermo* would be the background to some other event.
